How Absconded Bees Moved Into Our Hive on Their Own | Bee Swarm Behavior Explained

Beekeeping constantly reminds us of one thing — **bees know best.**

This week at Beverly Bees, we witnessed something truly amazing:  absconded bees from a colony we had just removed. The bees absconded… and then chose to move into one of our empty hive boxes *completely on their own.* 🐝🏡

This is bee swarm behavior at its most instinctual—and we captured the whole relocation on video.

📹 What Happened in the Absconded Bees Swarm Video?

In this video, a colony of absconded bees chose a new hive without intervention. No queen cage. No feeding. Just a clean hive box and natural instinct.

This is a powerful reminder that **bee relocation doesn’t always require human intervention**—but it *does* require preparation.

🐝 Why Do Bees Abscond?

“Absconding” is when an entire bee colony abandons its current hive. This can happen due to:

– Overheating or overcrowding
– Unfavorable or unsafe conditions
– Lack of nearby food or water
– Recent stress (such as from a removal)

In this case, the bees had just been removed from a structure and placed in a temporary hive. But instead of staying, they **flew into a nearby empty hive box** and claimed it as their new home.

🧰 Swarm Behavior Lesson for Beekeepers

If you’re managing recent live bee removals or for swarm season in general:

– 🏠 Always have an **extra hive body ready**
– 🐝 Bees often make **better decisions than we expect**
– 🌿 Sometimes the best practice is to let nature lead

🧠 Bee Tip of the Week

**Bees will often abscond if they’re unhappy.**
Have a clean, accessible hive box available during bee season to give them a better option.
